CELTIC FC Foundation are encouraging supporters to get active and raise funds, to help further our initiatives within our key priority areas of Health, Equality, Learning and Poverty (HELP).
Thousands of runners will descend on Glasgow’s George Square as the city plays host to the Great Scottish Run on Sunday, October 1, 2017. The event offers participants the choice of running in either the 10K or Half Marathon.
Among those who have already signed up to take part on behalf of Celtic FC Foundation are three members of our very own Supporters’ Committee – Mark Cameron, Paul Brennan and David Barrett (pictured above left to right).
As the Great Scottish Run approaches, they spoke to the official Celtic website about their involvement with the Foundation and their anticipation ahead of the event.
Mark Cameron, Chair of Celtic FC Foundation Supporters’ Committee, has been involved since 2012, having assisted with the Foundation’s 1254125 campaign. Having recently returned from volunteering in Malawi with the Foundation, Mark has now turned his attention to participating in the Great Scottish Run.
He said: “The best thing about being involved with Celtic FC Foundation, is helping to make a difference. The work that the Foundation does is incredible.
“I have run a few half-marathons before but that was a couple of decades ago, so I’m looking forward to running my first on behalf of Celtic FC Foundation.”
Paul Brennan has been a member of the Supporters’ Committee since joining in 2012, aiming to help raise the Foundation’s profile among supporters. Paul has recently run the Stirling Marathon on behalf of Celtic FC Foundation and is now taking on Glasgow’s Half Marathon.
He said: “Being involved with Celtic FC Foundation helps me become a better person. I see the example of others, what can be done and what is done in the name of all Celtic fans. I love the work of the Foundation. They shine a light on projects and gaps in society that most of us either know little about, or would otherwise be unable to directly help.
“This will be my fifth run for the Foundation, including the last four Great Scottish Runs. Running through the streets of Glasgow is a great stimulant. I get to see parts of the city I would never visit, and there is so much support on the streets. Running with a Celtic FC Foundation T-shirt also gives you an extra edge on the day.”
David Barrett is the ‘newbie’ of the group, having joined the Supporters’ Committee in October 2016 with a ‘burning desire to do more for Celtic’.
David said: “I can tell you that, at Celtic FC Foundation, the aspiration to improve the wellbeing of others runs through the veins of the organisation and the Supporters’ Committee. I am proud to be involved. The first-hand stories from those who have experienced help from the Foundation make you want to run a marathon to help others…well, a half-marathon will do for now.
“This is my first Foundation outing. I do a lot of events but always just for the fun of it, so this is a great and easy way to raise additional funds to help this terrific charity.
“I’d urge anyone that is unaware of the work that Celtic FC Foundation does to spend some time on the website, look at their social media postings, speak to those involved and think about how you can get involved. It could be as easy as a half-marathon…or even just a small donation of your time or money.”
With the run still over two months away, training is at the early stages for our trio and they’re not too worried about completing the race in any specific time, although they’re all hoping to complete the half-marathon within the two-hour mark.
Raising invaluable funds for Celtic FC Foundation is much more at the forefront of their focus, as Paul Brennan explained: “Celtic fans have always been generous when I’ve raised money for the Foundation, as have non-Celtic fans. When people are made aware of where the money goes and how it helps, they are keen to support.”
