The response to Celtic FC Foundation’s new fundraising event (The Heroes of ’86 – 30 Years on – and we’re no’ Kidding…) has been phenomenal! 

This celebration of the Club’s famous league win at Love Street in 1986, will take place in the Kerrydale Suite on the evening of Sunday, May 1 and every single part of the proceeds will go to the charitable arm of the football club, towards our good work in the community.

It will include the opportunity to take a trip down memory lane with footage from both key matches on that historic day in May 1986 – St Mirren v Celtic and Dundee v Hearts – a Q&A with some of the Bhoys who made the dream a reality, an auction, prize draw and two-course meal.

Those already confirmed to attend include the then Manager and new Celtic FC Ambassador, Davie Hay. In addition to Davie are Danny McGrain, Murdo MacLeod, Owen Archdeacon and Willie McStay with a few more names still to be announced.

And the event wouldn’t be complete without a very special guest – probably the most-loved player never to have actually worn the green and white Hoops – Mr Albert Kidd.

Celtic won the League in majestic and dramatic fashion at St Mirren’s home on Saturday, May 3, 1986. The Bhoys were crowned champions in one of the closest finishes in League history.

On that final day of the season Hearts were leading Celtic by two points and ahead on goal difference which meant a draw against Dundee would have been enough to see them win their first league title since 1960.

Celtic were in scintillating form at Love Street and went into the half-time break four goals up, adding a fifth in the second half. However, the Hoops were still reliant on a Dundee victory against Hearts.

With Hearts clinging on for the point they needed at Dens Park, Dundee made a substitution which will forever be remembered by the Celtic support. One Celtic fan replaced another as Tosh McKinlay made way for Albert Kidd, who then sensationally scored twice in the last 10 minutes to ensure a Dundee victory.

Supporters who had access to radios spread the news among the delirious away section at Love Street and both Davie Provan and Danny McGrain famously shared the Dens Park score-line with the players on the park.

Full time came at Dens Park a minute or so before it did at Love Street and the fans erupted. Celtic were champions.
