Glasgow City Mission donation from foundation’s appeal

WITH our 2017 Christmas Appeal gathering momentum, our spotlight series now looks at the work of another beneficiary, Glasgow City Mission.

Founded in 1826, Glasgow City Mission provides a holistic range of practical services for people battling homelessness, poverty and social isolation in Glasgow.

These services are designed to meet people’s immediate needs, such as food and shelter, and to address underlying issues to assist people to move forward.

Throughout the week, Glasgow City Mission offers a wide range of activities such as cooking classes, physical exercise and back-to-work support. They also provide valuable one-to-one support to their most vulnerable guests.

The past year has seen Glasgow City Mission grow and expand its services thanks to the generosity of the public, including the support of Celtic FC Foundation.

For many years, Glasgow City Mission has only had capacity to open during weekdays. However, with the support of Celtic FC Foundation, they have been able to add an additional Saturday service, allowing them to meet the demand from their service users and to plug a hole in the city’s service provision.

Graham Steven, Partnerships & Communications Manager said: “We are thrilled to have the support of Celtic FC Foundation once again this Christmas and to know that they are backing our new Saturday service.

“For a long time now, our guests have asked if we could open at the weekend. Thanks to the support we’ve received, we’re now able to do just that.

“We’re opening up to provide a safe and welcoming place where people can enjoy nourishing food, have good conversation with one another and get any help or advice that may be needed.

“Any donation received from Celtic FC Foundation’s Christmas Appeal this year, will make a significant contribution to the running of this sought after service”.

Glasgow City Mission is among a host of partner charities who will benefit from this year’s Christmas Appeal. Those confirmed so far include The Wayside Club, Loaves and Fishes, The Invisibles and Salvation Army Parkhead.

Our 2017 Christmas Appeal was launched at the end of October and reflects the very essence of why our club was set up back in 1887.

We want to help around 300 local families facing poverty, to provide a meal on the table and gifts for the kids. We want to bring the magic of Christmas to those homes. We are also looking to help vulnerable local pensioners to ease the financial burden at a challenging time of year plus a number of other local charities who support those experiencing homelessness or other disadvantage.

But we can’t do this without you. So together, let’s Share the Spirit of Celtic this Christmas.
