STILIYAN Petrov and James Milner got together at Paradise today to promote ‘A Match For Cancer’, the fantastic fundraising match which will take place at Celtic Park next month.
‘A Match for Cancer’, sponsored by Dafabet, will take place at Celtic Park on Saturday, September 8, 2018 (KO: 2pm) – and will see the Celtic legend and current Liverpool midfielder pull together opposing squads from the worlds of football and entertainment.
Every penny raised will be devoted to tackling cancer through three equal beneficiary charities – Celtic FC Foundation, The Stiliyan Petrov Foundation and The James Milner Foundation.
Stiliyan, who has bravely battled through leukaemia since being diagnosed in 2012, highlighted the incredible backing he received from the Celtic family. He said: “The support that my family and I have received from the Celtic fans over these past few years has been truly amazing, I cannot thank them enough.
“When we held the #19 Legends charity match back in 2013 to help raise funds for my Foundation, they came in their numbers and showed the world how special this place is and how special the Celtic support is. The reception that my family and I received that day was absolutely incredible and the Celtic support have continued to give me just as warm a welcome every time I see them.
“Our goal from this match is to help children and adults with cancer – and their families – to tackle the journey through diagnosis and treatment towards what we hope will be a positive outcome. It is a very special cause.”
For James Milner, the decision to head north to Celtic Park was easy. He explained: “Obviously Stan and I played together at Aston Villa so I know very well his fight against leukaemia. We were talking about Stan’s Foundation and mine doing something together and the idea of a match came up. The obvious choice was Celtic.
“Stan told me what a great club they are and how everything is organised to the highest level by Celtic FC Foundation. We also know how fanatical the fans are and how they support charity. I know what a big club it is – and not just because of my team-mate at Liverpool, Andrew Robertson – because I have talked down the years with people who have played for the Hoops.”
Celtic FC Foundation is delighted to confirm the first two cancer charity partners it will work with to make a positive difference to patients and their families.
Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity – the Schiehallion Ward.
The Ward was named after the mountain – Schiehallion – to mirror the journey for children with cancer. The charity recognises that it’s an uphill struggle, but also that you can walk a path with lots of people who will get you to the top. They provide a range of support services to help children during that journey.
Beatson Cancer Charity
The charity supports people affected by cancer, every step of the way. They make the journey easier by transforming the way cancer care is funded and delivered. They provide services, as well as funding specialists, research and education to invest in a better future for cancer patients and their families.
The James Milner Foundation, set up around the time of Stiliyan’s diagnosis, has Bloodwise, the charity that combats blood cancer, as one of its major beneficiaries.
