Charity the winner as Celtic and Dunfermline honour Jock Stein

PLAYING Legends of Celtic and Dunfermline united today at East End Park to honour the great Jock Stein and raise funds for a number of worthy causes, including all those affected by the current refugee crisis.

Just under 5000 fans poured into the home of the Fifers to watch their former heroes square up on the pitch, with the likes of Neil Lennon, Chris Sutton, Stiliyan Petrov, Tom Boyd, Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and Jackie McNamara lining up for the Bhoys.

They were joined by several high-profile Hoops fans such as James McAvoy, Martin Compston, Scotty Cardle and Gianni Capaldi, who had all given up their time to contribute to another fundraising drive.

In sun-kissed conditions, both teams served up an entertaining contest, though defences were on top for most of the match until John Watson slammed from an acute angle for the hosts.

A sublime finish from David Bingham sealed the spoils on day for the Dunfermline Legends – but it was charity that was the real winner with the proceeds of the match going towards the Celtic FC Foundation and the Pars Foundation.

The former’s share from the game and the other Jock Stein 30th anniversary events taking place this weekend will assist the refugee crisis on the continent, through international aid partner the Glasgow branch of the British Red Cross and, in particular their Europe Refugee Crisis Appeal.

It was a fitting way to pay tribute to Jock Stein, who passed away on September 10, 1985, and there were 30 seconds of applause before the game in honour of the great man, who remains revered by both clubs.

Celtic FC Foundation would like to thank everyone who attended the match at East End Park to get behind such a worthy cause. Donations can still be made HERE
