Supporter Matthew walking 500 miles in 50 days for the Foundation

Since early July, supporter Matthew McCann has been walking towards a target of 500 miles in support of Celtic FC Foundation. In tackling the distance in just 50 days, Matthew has set himself a huge personal challenge – kicking off on Monday, July 5 – with the aim of hitting his target by Tuesday, August 24.

Having seen the work of Celtic FC Foundation first-hand and the assistance provided throughout the pandemic, Matthew was eager to show his support and took on his own monumental task.

Speaking of his challenge, Matthew said: “I decided to do 500 miles in 50 days as I didn’t want to do something that could potentially be cancelled or affected by lockdown, and walking seemed the best solution for me.

“I have chosen Celtic FC Foundation to benefit from funds raised as they offer help to people from all ages and backgrounds, across Glasgow and beyond. Since the pandemic, times have been tough for so many and the Foundation have been at the forefront of providing support during this period. The main reason for choosing Celtic FC Foundation, however, is the immense support provided to my good friend Sean over the years.”

Matthew’s friend Sean Drew connected with the Foundation’s projects team after he was diagnosed with an auto immune deficiency that affects his neurological system. Sean’s condition has been likened to having dementia at a young age. Initially, he attended a Foundation project which supported him into a college place.

As Sean’s condition deteriorated, he had to stop attending college and approached Celtic FC Foundation for any further opportunities to engage and to give him a focus.

He attended our ‘Lions’ Lunch Breaks’ project, where he enjoyed chatting to participants of all ages and being in the stadium on a weekly basis gave him a huge lift.  He has also attended our ‘You’ll Never Talk Alone’ project, which is designed to tackle the growing issue of loneliness across all age groups and provide a safe and fun environment to make friends and socialise.

Matthew added: “Sean has been helped a great deal by the work of Celtic FC Foundation. In particular, the ‘You’ll Never Talk Alone’ project has been instrumental in providing him with support, giving himself and others a relaxing space and an escape from many of life’s challenges.”

Having originally set a target of £100, Matthew has already more than exceeded it. He has been amazed by the support and said: “It is truly humbling to see the generosity of people even in these uncertain times.

“So far the challenge has been going well, aside from the blisters. I’m currently on target with my weekly miles and I have some big walks planned in the coming weeks that will further extend my overall distance.
