NHS Staff at Gartnavel and Beatson to receive free meals

CELTIC FC Foundation, in partnership with 1051 GWR bar and grill restaurant in Glasgow, is today delighted to announce that 500 hot prepared meals a day will be made available to NHS staff and key workers at Gartnavel General Hospital and Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre, starting today.

An initial £10,500 has been invested into this initiative, as part of our Football for Good Fund.

The project aims to feed and boost the morale of NHS staff who work tirelessly across all roles and wards every day but the COVID-19 crisis has meant they have faced unimaginable challenges for the last few months. And as the country enters a crucial stage in easing lockdown measures, it’s still absolutely vital that those who care for us through the NHS are given as much support as possible.

The Football for Good Fund currently sits at £500,000, and our priority remains helping those most in need by putting food on the table and providing other essentials – in line with the Club’s founding principles.

1051 GWR has been providing free meals to staff from the adjacent Gartnavel General Hospital since the end of March, as the hospital canteen had to close due to lockdown measures. The restaurant has been relying on donations from the general public to keep the project running, so Celtic FC Foundation’s £10,500 contribution will allow the programme to continue.

David Maguire, owner of 1051 GWR said: “Since lockdown we have been operating a takeaway service and we’ve been giving away roughly 1000 meals every day. All this has been funded by donations, primarily from members of the public on our Go Fund Me page.

“Within the last couple of days Celtic FC Foundation has given us an enormous sum of money, and now we are able to invite all of the NHS staff over the next week to come and enjoy a hot meal, with an assortment of different items.

“Without the intervention from Celtic FC Foundation, we wouldn’t be able to facilitate this so we are incredibly grateful to the Foundation for providing the funding that will allow us to do this.

“We know that the Foundation itself is funded by supporters of the Club so our thanks go out to each and every one of them for making a difference. We know the NHS staff will be extremely grateful for this provision.”
