They come from bonnie Scotland, they come from county Cork, they come from dear old Donegal and even from New York… well, not quite. On this occasion it’s Scotland, England, Netherlands, mainland Spain and Mallorca, in order to cycle from Basel to Milan and raise funds for Celtic FC Foundation’s Paradise Recovery Café, among other projects.
Our group are setting off today from St. Jakob Park home of Basel FC, where Celtic started their 1969-70 European Cup campaign, to reach the final in the San Siro in Milan.
For some of the group, this will be our third cycle – and the completion of the trilogy of cities where Celtic played in European finals – for some it will be the second and others, a first time.
When Gaubi from Netherlands was asked why he has participated in all three cycles he replied that it was simple: “To share the highs and lows of a physical challenge with like-minded people and raising money for a charity close to our hearts, there is no better way to show the spirit of Celtic.”
Charlotte, one of the English cohort, and a first timer replied: “I loved the idea of an international challenge, as I had never done anything like this before. I’d heard so much about Celtic and the work of Celtic FC Foundation from my friend Paul, so I decided to sign up. Not really being a fan of football, Paul is doing a great job in converting me into a Celtic fan.”
Paul, on the other hand, a veteran of the Seville cycle, signed up for this trip as he had forgotten how much pain his legs were in last time. He added: “Raising funds for Celtic FC Foundation fulfils the very ethos of the origins of the Club.”
The Balearic Island of Mallorca is home to Peter for whom it is always a pleasure to raise money for Celtic FC Foundation. Having completed The Road to Lisbon and The Road to Seville, Peter said: “Taking part in the Road to Milan cycle was the natural thing to do to complete the trilogy.”
Alan from Glasgow added: “It is truly a privilege to participate and contribute to the community effort and all the great work that Celtic FC Foundation do.” While Mike in Aberdeen concluded by saying: “I am proud to be a part of this group of Bhoys and Ghirls, raising funds for those that are supported by Celtic FC Foundation.”
As we set off over the Alps to Milan, this truly international brigade of Celtic supporters, who believe profoundly in continuing the legacy of Brother Walfrid, do so with hopes for a following wind and knowing that it’s easier to go downhill but the views are better from the top. A bit like Celtic and the league, I guess!
We would like to thank everyone who has supported our efforts thus far. You can continue to do so by making a donation HERE.
