Kasper Schmeichel visits Celtic FC Foundation’s Lions’ Lunch Break project ahead of Dementia Action Week

Participants at Celtic FC Foundation’s Lions’ Lunch Break project enjoyed a special visit this week as Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel joined the session at Celtic Park ahead of Dementia Action Week.

Lions’ Lunch Breaks supports individuals living with dementia, alongside their families and carers, by providing a welcoming environment where participants can enjoy social connection, shared experiences and meaningful engagement together.

The project was established through funds raised by the Foundation’s ‘Lions’ Legacy Campaign’, which marked the 50th anniversary of the Lisbon Lions’ historic European Cup victory in 1967.

Almost a decade on, as the Club approaches the 60th anniversary of that triumph, the initiative continues to provide vital community support, recognising that dementia affects not only those living with the condition, but also the families and carers who support them every day.

The sessions are designed to offer stimulation, companionship and enjoyment for participants, while also giving carers valuable opportunities for peer support, conversation and respite within a relaxed and understanding setting.

Danish international Kasper Schmeichel spent time meeting participants, sharing stories from his career and taking part in the afternoon’s activities, helping to create a memorable and uplifting atmosphere throughout the session.

The visit highlighted the importance of ensuring the best possible quality of life for those living with dementia, while continuing to raise awareness and understanding of the condition.

Speaking during the visit, Kasper Schmeichel said: “Football clubs are the heart of their communities, and Celtic are very much a club that looks after the whole community.

“It’s great to see the work Celtic FC Foundation do, and it’s been lovely to come along and be part of it. There are some pretty decent singers on the karaoke too, so it’s been great fun.”

With Dementia Action Week approaching, the session served as a timely reminder of the importance of Celtic FC Foundation’s inclusive community projects, which promote understanding, connection and support for those affected by dementia.

Celtic FC Foundation remains committed to creating opportunities that make a meaningful difference, ensuring everyone continues to feel part of the Celtic family.
