CELTIC FC Foundation are delighted to announce Stiliyan Petrov as the latest former Celtic star to sign up for the Jock Stein Charity match this September.
The match will take place on Sunday, September 6 at East End Park (2pm KO) and will see a select squad of Celtic and Dunfermline Athletic Legends playing a match to commemorate the 30th anniversary of legendary manager, Jock Stein’s passing.
The proceeds from this event will see Celtic FC Foundation and the Pars Foundation – the respective charitable arms of both clubs – as beneficiaries.
Fans’ favourite Stiliyan spoke of his pride at pulling on the Hoops and his huge admiration for Jock Stein and the Lisbon Lions.
Stiliyan said: “Every time I’ve worn the shirt, I’ve felt proud to play for Celtic. It’ll be a great feeling to pull the jersey on once again.
“It’s going to be a great privilege to honour Jock Stein. Everything I’ve heard and seen about him as a manager – and that team – has been incredible and to play in this game will be amazing.”
Following his battle with Leukaemia in recent years, Stiliyan set up his own Foundation to help families who are dealing with someone suffering from the illness. Through this experience, Stiliyan is well aware of the challenges and importance of charitable events to raise profile for worthy causes.
He said: “As well as vital funds, these events bring awareness and attention to charities. Without funding – whether it’s for a specific cause or disease – the charity will not succeed.
“Events like these really are about giving people a chance to raise money and help others.”
The Bulgarian also voiced his affection for the Celtic fans and their tremendous commitment to the charitable heritage of the club.
He said: “Celtic should be proud of their charitable beginnings. It’s a unique club with a unique fan base and the charitable work has been amazing throughout the years. It’s also getting bigger and bigger and I hope it’ll continue to grow.”
Over the years, Petrov has been a consistent supporter of Celtic FC Foundation’s charity matches with appearances in his tribute match in 2013 as well as the Maestrio match last year.
The former No. 19 also promised a great atmosphere and a fitting spectacle.
He added: “Fans can expect another great game and another good performance from the Bhoys – if they’ve kept fit!
“It’ll be a good atmosphere to honour a great man and, as with every game with Celtic supporters, it’ll be another incredible, amazing day.”
