Celtic FC Foundation would simply not be able to carry out the work that we do, was it not for continued backing of selfless supporters throughout the world, on a regular basis.
Back in February 2019, an adventurous group of Celtic supporters, naming themselves ‘The Wanderbhoys’, scaled the world’s highest walkable mountain – Mount Kilimanjaro – in support of the Foundation, raising an incredible total of £50K.
Today a batch of new recruits will leave Glasgow on their way to trek through the Andes mountain range on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru. They had originally aimed to trek the Great Wall of China, however government restrictions in the area meant this was unfortunately not possible. Undeterred, the group quickly adapted their plans, ensuring that the Foundation would continue to benefit of any well-earned fundraising efforts.
Lifelong Celtic fan and Scottish actor, Frank Gilhooley, well known for his roles in Still Game, River City, Outlander and Guardians of the Galaxy, created the The Wanderbhoys and will once again lead the Bhoys and Ghirls, as this time they embark on the long trip to Peru. Hoping the trip will be as memorable as the last to Mount Kilimanjaro, Frank said: “We were hoping the Great Wall of China would be our next big leap but it wasn’t to be and the guys were up for doing something just as iconic. Machu Picchu will be a challenge but we have a good group of like-minded, great people on board who want to do their bit, to help those less fortunate.”
Frank continued: “This is bucket list for so many people and we are getting to take part in challenges like this while helping so many others that receive vital support from the Foundation. Doing something so unique, while helping others gives you a feeling like nothing else. We feel like The Wanderbhoys is a legacy and hope we can continue to live up to that legacy by regularly doing these challenges and fundraising for a great cause. Celtic FC Foundation’s projects at home and abroad are unique and we are proud to attach The Wanderbhoys name to such outstanding work.”
Frank is adamant that no matter how much of a challenge the next 10 days will be, there are “no negatives” to getting involved in raising money for the Foundation and ticking off a bucket list item at the same time.
Everyone at Celtic FC Foundation wishes the group a safe and enjoyable trip and we would like to thank each and every one of them, as well as all of the supporters who have contributed.
