Once again, the response to Celtic FC Foundation’s Famine Memorial shirt auction has been incredible, but there’s still time to get involved. The auction will close tonight – Tuesday, May 24 – at around 7pm (bidders should check individual items for exact end times).
Celtic once again wore the Famine Memorial crest on the Club jersey, at the final cinch Premiership match of the season on Saturday, May 14, in recognition of the tragedy of The Great Hunger (An Gorta Mór).
Unquestionably, The Great Hunger was a transforming event in Ireland, which changed the demographic and cultural landscape forever. Indeed, there is nothing else in the history of the Irish people that can be likened to The Great Hunger, either for its immediate impact or its legacy of emigration, cultural loss and decline of the Irish language.
As a Scottish Club established in 1887, with such proud Irish roots, Celtic will always be linked to these tragic events.
16 of these match issue shirts – signed by each respective player, as well as one very special shirt signed by Manager, Ange Postecoglou – are being auctioned in support of the Celtic FC Foundation, providing supporters with the opportunity to own a wonderful collectors’ item.
The shirts are currently available via Celtic FC Foundation’s charity eBay account which can be accessed HERE.
Proceeds will be devoted to supporting children and young people in Ireland, through our Ability Counts and Summer Games projects.
