WITH just over a week until Christmas, our annual Appeal is coming to a climax, and today we continue our spotlight series on the organisations who will benefit from your generous donations.
Our attention now turns to The Wayside Club and the work that the organisation does to support those living in Glasgow, who are facing homelessness.
The Wayside Club opened its doors in August, 1932 in a former Boxing Gym, with the purpose of helping those who were facing homelessness throughout Glasgow. Providing somewhere to gather, as well as offering advice, comfort and support were the organisation’s main aims and these aims have carried through to today, with The Wayside Club providing a safe space, open seven days-a-week.
Helping up to 100 people each evening, this invaluable service provides food and hot drinks, as well as toiletries, clean clothes and respite from life on the streets.
The Wayside Club relies heavily on donations from local groups and individuals and the support received from Celtic FC Foundation in the past, has played an important role, in helping the organisation over the festive period.
Jim White, Secretary of The Wayside Club, said: “We owe a great deal of gratitude over the years to Celtic FC Foundation and especially their Christmas Appeal, which has helped so many individuals that come to our door each night, looking for clean clothes and a hot meal.”
Any donation received through this year’s Christmas Appeal will help to keep The Wayside Club’s doors open throughout the Christmas Holidays and also provide a wonderful Christmas Dinner, for up to 150 people who use their service.
Jim added: “The ethos of Celtic FC Foundation has parallels with that of The Wayside Club. To support those less fortunate than ourselves. We’d like to thank all of the supporters who’ve donated to the Christmas Appeal, it will make a huge difference to the people who we engage with.”
The Wayside Club joins Loaves and Fishes, The Invisibles, Glasgow East Women’s Aid, St Roch’s FC Foundation, Elpis Centre, the Salvation Army Parkhead, St Anne’s Primary School, St Anne’s Church, the Cardinal Hume Centre, Simon Community Scotland, Spirit Aid, Glasgow Night Shelter, Women’s Aid Dublin, Women’s Aid Belfast and Lisburn, Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity, Scottish Refugee Council and Glasgow’s No.1 Baby and Family Support Service, as the Appeal beneficiaries announced so far.
Our Appeal aims to honour the founding principles set out when the Club was formed back in 1887, by continuing to help those in our community, who are most in need. We want to help hundreds of local families facing poverty, by giving them the kind of Christmas most of us take for granted.
We also want to support pensioners on our doorstep and help out local charities. We can make a massive difference to the lives of children, the homeless, refugees and those living in refuge or facing other challenges.
