CELTIC FC Foundation are delighted to present an event 129 years in the making – The 2016 H.E.L.P. Pilgrimage.
Taking place on Bank Holiday Monday, May 30, The H.E.L.P. Pilgrimage features a 17-mile sponsored walk, encompassing four historical Celtic sites and honouring four legendary figures in the club’s history at each respective venue – all under our banner of Health, Equality, Learning and Poverty.
– HUMBLE BEGINNINGS (St Mary’s Church, Calton
(HEALTH –Tommy Burns)
The Pilgrimage sets off from the site of Celtic’s formation. The Calton is famously the birthplace of Tommy Burns and the community is synonymous with his legend. Tommy Burns tragically lost his life to skin cancer at the age of just 51 and here, we pay tribute to his memory and the value of improving HEALTH
– EAST END (Barrowfield)
(EQUALITY – Jock Stein)
‘We are a football team who will play anyone from anywhere, from any walk of life, from any religion, from any creed. That is Celtic Football Club.’ – Jock Stein
Jock Stein firmly promoted EQUALITY, and his legacy at Barrowfield in the East End of Glasgow conjures the spirit of Celtic’s golden era.
– LEGENDARY FIGURES (Viewpark)
(LEARNING – Jimmy Johnstone)
Voted as the Greatest Ever Celt by the Celtic supporters, Jimmy Johnstone enshrines the best of the legendary figures to have played for the club. His technique, skill and ability underline the importance of encouraging LEARNING. At the Jimmy Johnstone memorial garden in Viewpark, we honour the talent and status of the greatest player in the club’s history.
– PARADISE (Celtic Park)
(POVERTY – Brother Walfrid)
Participants end the pilgrimage at Celtic Park, arriving at the Brother Walfrid Statue, alongside Jock Stein and Jimmy Johnstone as well as the Tommy Burns mural. As The H.E.L.P. Pilgrimage draws to a close, we remember Celtic’s founding father and acknowledge Celtic Football Club’s reason for being, tackling POVERTY.
