Simon Donnelly pays visit to Paradise Pit Stop ahead of Foundation’s Legends Charity Match

With Celtic FC Foundation’s Legends Charity Match now just over two weeks away, we recently caught up Simon Donnelly, who paid a visit to the Foundation’s Paradise Pit Stop project, the main beneficiary of the proceeds raised from the match.

Through the project, we provide a free warm meal and a selection of hot and soft drinks, four days a week, in a safe, non-judgmental and welcoming environment for individuals and families.

Paradise Pit Stop is, however, about more than just food – it’s an inclusive space where people from some of Glasgow’s most vulnerable communities can access essential support services.

Our aim is to provide relief from food poverty and tackle the increasing issue of loneliness and isolation in our communities.

Simon spoke about the experience of joining us at Paradise Pit Stop and his excitement ahead of featuring in the match, as Celtic Legends get set to face Manchester United at Celtic Park on Saturday, September 6.

He said: “It has been really good to come along to Paradise Pit Stop. You hear about this place, obviously the raising of funds to facilitate it but it’s only when you get down here and start meeting the people, that you see how important it is for so many to come and have a safe place to meet up, make friends and most importantly, get fed.

“It is special. The attendees are all familiar with each other and it’s a really warm atmosphere. It’s important work that is being done by the Foundation, so it was really heartwarming for me to come and be part of it and see firsthand what’s happening.

“It’s imperative that it keeps going because so many people unfortunately still need this support and there will of course be many more that will need help too. It’s fantastic that the proceeds raised from the match will support projects like this. We turn up, we play a game of football and it is great for us, as we are a long time retired but the most important thing is that hopefully the fans will come along and show their support.

“It’s fantastic to be involved in the match. I’ve been lucky enough to play in the previous Legends matches and it’s special to rewind a few years and be back in the Celtic Hoops again but as I said, the most important thing is the reason behind it, which is things like, Paradise Pit Stop.

“I’m under a bit of pressure as I see Tom Rogic has been brought in. I remember watching him not so long ago playing out here. Big Joe Hart as well and plenty of others, so I’m looking forward to seeing all the Bhoys and hopefully the management team will even give me five minutes at the end.”

The Legends Charity Match promises to be a fantastic occasion for all the family and tickets are priced at:

  • Adults – £18
  • Concessions – £9
