As the cinch Scottish Premiership champions rounded off a wonderful league campaign in style on Saturday, the Celtic team once again wore the National Famine Memorial crest on the club jersey, in recognition of the tragedy of The Great Hunger.
Unquestionably, The Great Hunger (An Gorta Mór) was a transforming event in Ireland, which changed the demographic and cultural landscape forever. Indeed, there is nothing else in the history of the Irish people that can be likened to The Great Hunger, either for its immediate impact or its legacy of emigration, cultural loss and decline of the Irish language.
As a Scottish club established in 1887 with such proud Irish roots, Celtic will always be linked to these tragic events.
Celtic FC Foundation is delighted to confirm that 16 of these match issue shirts – signed by each respective player, as well as one very special shirt signed by manager, Ange Postecoglou – will be auctioned, providing supporters with the opportunity to own a wonderful collectors’ item.
The 16 shirts will be auctioned via Celtic FC Foundation’s charity eBay account, which can be accessed HERE. The auction will go live at 7pm on Thursday, May 19 and will close at around 7pm on Tuesday, May 24 (bidders should check individual items for exact end times).
Proceeds will be devoted to supporting children and young people in Ireland, through our Ability Counts and Summer Games projects.
