Celtic FC Tour Guide Matt Corr to run Boston Marathon for the Foundation

Celtic Tour Guide, Matt Corr is set to take on another challenge to raise funds for Celtic FC Foundation.

Matt spoke of the importance of the Club’s charitable arm and why he has decided to raise funds for Celtic FC Foundation, yet again.

He said: “It’s a natural link for me as a Celtic supporter and a Celtic FC employee and I am fascinated by the charitable ethos of the Club.

“The Foundation is a direct link to the very beginnings of Celtic and the spirt of Brother Walfrid lives on throughout the incredible work they carry out.

‘The more I found out about what the Foundation do on a daily basis, I felt a desire to help Celtic FC Foundation in any way I could through challenging myself and fundraising, I have loved being involved over the last several years.’

It is for this reason that Matt has decided to take on his next challenge which will be the Boston Marathon taking place this Monday, April 17, 2023.

Matt, began running for charity in 2003 following the sad passing of his parents and has now completed five of the Abbott World Marathon Majors – Berlin, London, New York, Chicago and Tokyo.

Matt now feels that it is time to complete the sixth and final major in Boston, with fundraising for the Foundation once again, offering the perfect way to round off his journey.

“There are six Abbott World Marathon Majors,” he explained, “and if you complete all six majors you become what is called a ‘Six Star Finisher’ and as of this year there are around 10,000 people in the world who have achieved this.

“Once I cross the finish line in Boston, I will have completed all six of the world majors.

“In terms of a target time, this is not important to me. My main aim is just to cross the finish line whilst raising some awareness and money for Celtic FC Foundation.

“The Boston Marathon will be my last dance in the marathon world, which will be a nice way to end a personal goal of mine, and I cannot think of a better pairing than doing this whilst raising money for such a worthy cause.”

Matt has been an incredible supporter of the Foundation over the last number of years. His fundraising efforts have seen him take on several marathons, while he and his family also sponsored the building of a school kitchen in Zambia, as part of the Foundation’s 67 Kitchens Project.

The kitchen proudly bears the Corr family name, and Matt and his brother Robert are part of a group of supporters’ who were scheduled to travel to Zambia in the summer of 2020 before the pandemic unfortunately struck, with the trip having since been postponed until further notice.

This 67 Kitchens link has been a key reason for Matt’s continual support of the Foundation, however, he recently spoke of some of the Foundation’s other projects that are being delivered, which he’d had less knowledge of.

“I love the idea that Celtic FC Foundation is delivering projects around the globe, whether it be in London, Ireland or New York, not to mention the 67 Kitchens that are spread throughout Malawi and Zambia,” he said.

‘Or closer to home, such as Paradise Pit Stop, which is a fairly new project that really connects to the origins of why the Club was founded.’

The Foundation simply couldn’t help those most in need within our communities without the backing of supporters like Matt and the wider Celtic family.

Matt proudly runs in the hoops with the Foundation crest displayed on the back, he has seen and heard support no matter where in the world he is running.

“Running through the streets of Tokyo in the pouring rain, I was starting to struggle when all of a sudden I heard a spectator shout ‘Come on the Hoops’,” he recalled.

“This was the adrenaline boost I needed in that moment. It’s iconic we are able to spread the joy of Celtic all over the world whilst helping those most in need.”

Matt has spoken of the spirit of Brother Walfrid and it is truly fitting that he will complete his marathon journey on the day that marks the anniversary of our founder’s passing.

Everyone at the Foundation would like to share our immense gratitude to Matt and wish him well as he takes on his latest challenge.
