DAVID Edgar may have already clocked up almost 50 miles on his bike so far this season but, from his point of view, the trip to Aberdeen for Celtic’s clash on Wednesday night, is where the real test begins.
David has set himself the incredible challenge of cycling to each and every one of Celtic’s 19 away league matches throughout the course of the season, to help raise invaluable funds for Celtic FC Foundation.
To date, the challenge has seen him cycle to Firhill, Rugby Park, New Douglas Park and Ibrox, taking in 48.47 miles. David’s cycle to Pittodrie, however, will make his achievements thus far look comparatively easy as he prepares for the 180-mile journey.
David said: “The way the fixtures have fallen has made it quite an easy start for me to be honest, as none of the initial four matches were particularly far away.
“The next couple of months though are where it really becomes a lot tougher with journeys to Aberdeen, Perth, Dingwall, Motherwell, Edinburgh twice and Dundee.
“All in, that will be 654 miles covered by the end of the year. My next cycle to Aberdeen alone will be more than three times the distance I’ve clocked up so far in total.
“It’s going to be hard work but I’m really looking forward to it.”
The challenge has also brought about a number of firsts for David as he was invited to speak on a football podcast and his story was also featured in a newspaper.
With Celtic having won all of their away league matches so far this season, David has been delighted to have witnessed a 100 per cent record on the road. However, he’s not been doing any unusual routines for good luck.
David said: “The only routine I’ve been doing is making sure that I leave for every trip from Celtic Park.”
The Boxing Day fixture at Dens Park will mean that David will have to leave his family on Christmas Day to cycle the 96-mile journey to Dundee, but his commitment to the task has never been in doubt.
He said: “The fact that it’s a 12.30pm kick off on Boxing Day isn’t ideal but I’ve set myself this challenge and I’m determined to do it properly.
“I’ll have lunch and exchange presents with my wife and then I’ll set off for Dundee. I’ll spend the night up there before cycling to Dens the next morning. My wife has been really supportive and has backed me all the way as she knows how much this means to me.”
David has been humbled by the support he has received from fellow fans. He added: “It’s been absolutely amazing so far. I’ve received loads of donations, many of which are from people I don’t even know but they’ve seen my story and wanted to show their support.
“On a couple of trips so far I’ve even been able to leave the bike at pubs near the grounds and they’ve done some collections for me which has been brilliant.
‘I’ve also had a fellow supporter offer to join me on some of the journeys. We cycled to Hamilton together and he’s also joining me for the Aberdeen cycle, so it’s great to have some company.
“I can’t thank people enough for the support they’ve given me.”
David has raised almost £1,000 for Celtic FC Foundation through his efforts but hopes to raise £5,000 throughout the course of the season. As well as his cycling, he plans to hold a race night and five-a-side football tournament to help boost funds raised.
