AS our beneficiary series continues, we turn our focus to another organisation that has benefited through the Football for Good Fund – Help the Homeless who received a donation of £10,000.
Help the Homeless is a non-profit community group that focuses on giving food and essentials to the homeless, vulnerable groups, the elderly and those that are struggling financially.
The charity focuses on outreach support, and regularly holds pop-up kitchens in Glasgow – offering hot and cold meals, drinks, food parcels, clothes, shoes, toiletries, sleeping bags and other basic essentials.
Helen McMillan from Help the Homeless spoke in detail about what the organisation is doing throughout the current COVID-19 crisis and expressed her thanks for the support received through the Football for Good Fund.
She said: “We knew that we had to find a way to continue to support people in need during these uncertain times, so our operation had to be adapted.
“We have a group of volunteers cooking from their kitchens at home to provide hot meals to those in need. So far we have cooked and delivered over 2,500 meals and we have teamed up with Aspire Housing and Tesco Maryhill to provide over 300 food parcels to supported individuals, vulnerable and elderly people across Glasgow and Inverclyde.
“It is uncertain how long this will go on for but we are committed to supporting as many people in this crisis as we can. With new requests for meal support, toiletries and food parcels coming in at a rapid rate, we fear that this is only going to get worse for struggling people as the weeks go on.
“Celtic FC Foundation have really been a godsend. The money received has allowed us to provide so many meals, food parcels and toiletries to hundreds of people across Glasgow.
“On behalf of Help the Homeless, our partners, Aspire Housing and Maryhill Tesco Community Champion, every supported individual, every elderly person, every person experiencing homelessness, we would like to say a massive thank you to Celtic FC Foundation for their continued support of our group.”
Help the Homeless joins a host of organisations already confirmed as Football for Good Fund beneficiaries, including FareShare, Geeza Break, PEEK, Glasgow’s Golden Generation (for the elderly), FARE Scotland, Eric Liddell Centre, Glasgow North-East Foodbank, Birth, Baby and Beyond and NHS staff at Gartnavel Hospitals and the Royal Infirmary in Glasgow.
