AS the Jock Stein Charity Match approaches, former Celtic captain Tom Boyd has spoken of his excitement and pride ahead of the event to mark the 30th anniversary of the passing of the legend of all legends.
The charity match will feature a host of Celtic and Dunfermline legends and takes place at East End Park, Dunfermline on Sunday, September 6, (KO: 2.00pm).
Following the match, there will be a charity dinner at The Glen Pavilion in the centre of the town.
The match will feature a host of ex-Celtic and Dunfermline stars, as well as a few celebrities, playing a charity match in memory of a true icon of world football, with both clubs’ charities – Celtic FC Foundation and the Pars Foundation – being the beneficiaries.
Among those lining up for the Hoops select, is ex-Celtic defender and treble-winning captain Tom Boyd.
Tom said: “It’s a wonderful and fitting tribute to Jock Stein, the greatest manager in our history. I’m looking forward to the occasion and it’ll be a moment of personal pride to honour Jock Stein’s memory.”
The match will see many ex-Celts returning to what was familiar territory during their playing days.
On the prospect of running out in front of the Celtic fans and returning to East End Park, Tom said: “During my playing days, I always enjoyed going there. It’s a tight ground but fortunately we always seemed to come away with a result.
“It’s been a year since the Maestrio match – which incidentally was the last time I kicked a ball – so I’m going to need to sharpen up my fitness and make sure I’m ready. I’m sure come September all the guys will be ready to put on a show.”
Tom Boyd has been a long-standing supporter of Celtic FC Foundation’s work and has been involved in numerous fundraising events and has seen the generosity of the Celtic support first-hand.
Tom added: “I’m aware of all the great work that the Foundation do in our communities and they really are at the heart of what we are all about as a club.
“Being involved with Celtic FC Foundation, you realise just how important the charitable heritage of our club is to our fans. It’s their support that really makes these occasions so special and hopefully, we’ll have another tremendous turn out for this game.”
